What is a healthy diet?
A healthy diet should contain:- • plenty of starchy foods such as bread, pasta, rice, breakfast cereals, potatoes – you will get more benefit if you go for high fibre versions such as wholemeal bread • try to stick to the 5 a day rule – 5 servings of fruit and vegetables • have moderate amounts of dairy products (or alternatives) – choose law fat versions such as semi skimmed or skimmed milk for instance • moderate amount of meat, fish or alternatives such as eggs, beans, peas and lentils - look for lower fat versions where possible • try to limit your salt intake by reading labels on pre-prepared food • an occasional higher fat snack doesn’t do any harm as long as it is occasional
