Weald and Downland Open Air Museum
The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic houses and agricultural buildings dating from the 13th century to Victorian times, rescued from destruction and rebuilt in a magnificent 50 acre parkland setting. The houses range from a tiny 13th century flint cottage to a pair of timber-framed Victorian agricultural labourers' cottages from the 1860s. There is also a Bayleaf medieval farmstead, a wonderful example of a timber-framed hall-house from the early 15th century and a toll cottage which was built for a new turnpike road in 1807 at Beeding Sussex. After being rescued from destruction, the buildings are carefully dismantled, conserved and rebuilt to their original form and bring to life the homes, farmsteads and rural industries of the last 500 years. For people who like to see how people worked years ago there is are carpenters, plumbers and brickmakers workshops; barns; a granary and a tread wheel from the South Downs. It’s worth having a look at the at the working water mill where stone ground flour is produced daily and the rare and traditional breeds of farm livestock - working horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. There are regular demonstrations of traditional crafts in which you can see the skills of the early carpenters, find out about traditional building techniques and learn how we help to conserve rural crafts. The Museum is situated 7 miles north of Chichester, West Sussex on the A286.
