New UK Motorcycle Test October 2008
I’m sure any would be bikers out there already know about the new bike test due to come into force in October this year. But, just in case you don’t here are some details about it. The new practical test is being brought in to comply with European legislation. The new test will contain two elements: The higher speed maneuvers and other exercises will be tested on safe off-road sites and take about 8 minutes to complete. The accompanied riding element of the test will follow, consisting of a road ride include normal stops, hill and angle starts. Candidates who have exhibited riding skills of a dangerously incompetent level during the off-road part of the test will not be permitted to proceed to the on-road element. The new EU standards will set extra and more demanding special maneuvers that must be included in every practical motorcycling test. The new standards include: A minimum of two maneuvers being carried out at slow speed, including a slalom A minimum of two maneuvers which are carried out at higher speed, of which one maneuver should be in second or third gear, at a speed of at least 30 km/h (18.6 mph) and one maneuver avoiding an obstacle at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (31.1 mph) A minimum of two braking exercises, including an emergency brake at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (31.1 mph) The new test will be harder, more expensive, and you will probably have to travel further to your nearest special test centre. At the moment there are around 200 test centers in the UK, but there are only going to be 65 new 'super' test centers. The best advice is to get your test before October to save yourself money, effort and traveling.
