Keeping Your Child Safe
Children’s safety is paramount to parents these days which is not surprising when you look at the statistics. Every year in the United States alone between 200 and 300 children are kidnapped and another 50 – 150 are murdered. Here are some tips to keep your children safe. Always know where your children are, especially young children Never drop children off ‘at the gate’ when taking them to clubs or events. Always make sure they get in safely Never buy clothing or jewelry with your child’s name on, as if someone knows their name they may not see them as a stranger Never allow your child out on their own, there’s more safety in numbers Speak openly with them about their safety Pay attention to anyone who is focusing an unusual amount of attention to your child or yourself — buying gifts, phoning all the time, dropping by the house, etc Teach them how to answer the telephone if they are in the house alone – they should never tell a caller they’re home alone. Instruct them to say that Mum or Dad is busy, and take a message Always ask who they are going out with and where they are going Note what your child is wearing before they go out Don’t keep secrets - child molesters known to the child often say that a kiss or a touch is 'our secret'. Tell your children that some secrets should never be kept, even if they said they promised they wouldn’t tell Notice changes in your child's behaviour Discuss the concept of strangers with your child – younger children may not understand that a person they see such as the ice cream man or someone in a local shop are still classed as strangers |
