Household Tips To Save Money

Many cleaning jobs around the house can be done with a range of products that you have in your kitchen already. Forget all the expensive commercial cleaners and try the some of the following to save money.

Some of the products that are really useful are listed below:

Soap
Water
Bicarbonate of Soda
Vinegar
Lemon Juice
Salt
Coarse Scrubbing Sponge

General Household Tips

When using tinfoil for cooking, place the shiny side of the tinfoil onto whatever you are cooking. This reflects the heat onto your cooking, saving you on cooking time and so money.

Cut Brillo/Scouring pads in half before using them. It’s much more economical and it is reported that cutting them helps to sharpen scissors.

Don’t throw old toothbrushes away. They can be used for cleaning in hard to reach areas such as the back of taps when they are close to the wall, this saves buying special small brushes.

Clean stained sinks by pouring some washing power into it and rubbing gently with a soft cloth.

Baby sterilising fluid can be used to disinfect work surfaces, chopping boards and crockery. Just make up a solution and wipe it over. After you have used it for this don’t throw it away. Put your dishcloths and sponges into it to disinfect them as well.

If food splashes out when you are microwaving something it can be hard to remove later. To make the job easier, boil a cup or bowl of water in the microwave and let it sit inside the over steaming for between 5-10 minutes. This will soften the debris inside the oven making it easier to clean. If you add a little vinegar to the water, this will deodorise the oven at the same time.

To remove marks from stainless steel cookers or refrigerators, polish with a little baby oil on a soft clean cloth.

Clean the refrigerator. Wash with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar.

Washing machine & dishwasher- Add vinegar to the soap container and run through a regular cycle to dissolve detergent residues.

To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.

Save money on air fresheners by refilling them. The pull-up style air fresheners can be refilled with aromatherapy or oil burner oils. Simply put a few drops of your chosen fragrance into the air freshener and fill up with water. Leave a couple of inches empty at the top of the bottle, so if the fragrance isn’t strong enough you can add some more oil.

You can clean irons by heating equal parts vinegar and salt in a small pan. Rub solution on the cooled iron surface to remove dark or burned stains:-
Use a paste of bicarbonate of soda & water to clean the bottom of your iron.

Clean silver with a solution made from one and a half teaspoons of salt and one and a half teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in one litre of water, bring to the boil and drop silver cutlery in, boil for 3 minutes and then polish with a soft cloth. If the silver is badly tarnished, add a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil. This will react with the soda to lift the tarnish.
