Household Cleaning Tips

You can help to keep your kitchen insect free by mixing water and tea tree oil in a spray bottle and spraying around the doors and windows of your kitchen. – mix 8 parts water to 2 parts tea tree.

Free your iron of limescale by pouring equal amounts of vinegar and water into the water holder. Put the iron onto the steam setting and let it stand for around 5 minutes. Allow the iron to cool down then drain and rinse.

To clean the bottom of your iron use bicarbonate of soda mixed with water to make a fairly stiff paste and then rub over the base of the iron. Remove the paste with kitchen towel and run the iron (heated) over some scrap material to make sure it has all been removed.

If an egg breaks on the floor or worktop it can easily be cleaned up the sprinkling some salt onto it. Leave it for a few minutes and the egg will harden and come up easily.

To clean copper pots and pans fill a 600ml(1pint) spray bottle with vinegar and add 45ml(3 tablespoons) of salt. Spray onto the copper; let it stand for an hour then rub clean.

To avoid white watermarks in pans when you have been boiling puddings, eggs, boil-in-the-bag-rice etc., add a small amount of vinegar to the water, this will not affect the taste of the food and makes cleaning easier. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, cider vinegar isn’t quite as strong.

When silk flower arrangements get dusty, spray them with hair spray to renew their appearance. It gives them more body and makes them like new.

To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.

If someone has been smoking, you can remove the smell by leaving a small bowl of vinegar in the room overnight. - Please Note – if you have any pets please make sure they can’t reach the bowl.

Green kitchen scourers or kitchen sponges with scouring pad are ideal to remove pet hairs from furniture and carpets. Rub the ‘rough’ side over the item to be cleaned and the hairs are picked up easily.

Another way to clear up pet hair for furniture and carpets is to wear a dampened rubber glove and wipe it across the furniture or carpet. This clumps the hair together and you can simply lift it off.

Clean brass by rubbing with a lemon half dipped in salt. It will not only clean but also leaves a great shine.

For spilled wax on carpets and upholstery, put a brown paper bag over the dried wax and run a hot iron over it. The bag will absorb the hot wax.

Sprinkle lampshade with bi-carbonate of soda, leave for 5 minutes then using a clean paint brush, brush it over, vacuum to remove the soda from fabric. This also helps to remove the smell of tobacco smoke residue and odours.

If you get chewing gum on clothing you can either stick it in the freezer, and wait for the gum to freeze, whereupon you can scrape it off with a knife, or alternatively use vinegar, which makes it easy to scrub off.

You can remove tomato ketchup from a carpet quite easily with glycerine. Carefully remove excess from carpet, then rub glycerine into the stain. Sponge with warm water but try not to wet the carpet to much.

Use air freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job as well as leaving a lovely smell.
